funeral season

It started in Februray. One of my students from last year. It was awkward because I didn't feel quite as bad as maybe I should have. But my heart ached for all those 18 year old pall bearers. Next was a student's sister. It was only a week or so later and I didn't make it. Kid funerals need lots of space in between. Then on a fun girl trip to San Francisco I checked my voicemail from the back seat. First was a message from my dad saying to call him. It sounded urgent. Then again, he always sounds urgent. Next a message from my sister asking what I am doing about travel, hotel and flowers. I knew someone had died immediately. My uncle. But I have never really called him that. More like my mother's brother. He is one of those relatives you don't really talk about. Into Harleys, tatoos, women, snakes and drugs the exact opposite of my conservative mom. He was around enough, but we didn't exactly exchange Christmas cards. But he was my mom's brother and the tear...

out of habit

Why is it that we ( or at least me) can be so quickly sidetracked. I can hit the gym consistantly for weeks, miss a few days and not go back for a month ( or lately more). I have been sick ( still puking), busy ( TAKS) and suddenly my blog is blank for over a month. I think I forgot how to write. How to process in my favorite way. It's not just my gym or my blog it is bad stuff ( or good stuff, bad in the sense that i am not doing them consistently) like tithing, church attendance, reading and studying the word daily, keeping up with old friends, budgeting, ......that kind of thing. I would like to blame this baby growing inside me or even the stupid TAKS test, but the truth is I have been this easy to derail for years. Bad habits are hard to break, and apparently good habits are even harder to keep. We need more than just New Years Day to make resolutions. We need a chance to renew our good habits more like once a month ( or week). So for today, nothing special Wednesday, an...

almost a person

I feel like I have been living in a black hole the last 3 weeks. O was sick for most of it. First the flu (we all got it), then an upper resporatory thing that landed him in the ER, then another mystery fever virus. This baby finally kicked in leaving me exhausted and wretching. O was admitted to the hospital for a very very long weekend, that included me sleeping in a crib with him for part of the time. ( yes you read that correctly). O finally got better and everyone got to go back to school and just in time for TAKS. This is a huge part of my job and meant every free second at work was spent in the testing room. No going home at 3 or meeting friends for coffee, but late afternoons, working lunches and a few Saturday mornings. We are all fever free. The first round of TAKS tests have been mailed off, but the puking continues. If it weren’t for damn spring forward I would almost feel like a person today. Blogging will resume soon………

a slightly late Valentines post

Me and Shaun have always had Valentines traditions. First of all we don't make a huge deal out of the day. I love an excuse to be sappy and lately it feels like I need to schedule romantic......but we don't let Halmark steal all the glory. Our first Valentines we put a 5$ limit on our gifts and were told to be creative. For me that was writing why I loved him on the back of every StarWars valentine in the box. For Shaun it meant bouncy balls and a bag of half eaten candy. So we upped the limit and threw the creativity clause out the window. Back in Lubbock we used to always go to Orlandos on Q ( because no one goes past University) and savored the mafia queso. Here we have always gone out the night or 2 before to skip the big crowds. Plus I am impatient and can never wait that long. With O and another on the way I was looking especially forward to a special date. Then we all got the flu. No one felt like eating out or going out or being even a little bit romantic. To give Shaun...

shut in

I have yet to do to a full day or work this week. Maybe tomorrow. Fridays are always good. We have the flu. We meaning, Shaun had it last week. O got it this weekend and it hit me about Tuesday. It ran over me yesterday. I haven't checked email, done laundry or cooked dinner. Mostly I have just laid in bed and watched bad tv. I have been through 2 boxes of kleenex, 4 bottles of gatorade and go everywhere covered in my green furry blanket. Notice I did not say any medicine. Apparently all I can have is Tylonal. I called the dr. and said I had the flu and asked what medicines I could take. I expected a much longer list. I have done this before. I had the flu when I was pregnant with Owen, but was much further along so I had more medicinal options. I was under the impression that all Tylonal products were ok. No Nyquil but atleast I could have that fabulous Tylonal nightime cold and flu elixer medicine. Nope. I should have waited 5 more weeks to get the flu. My options were Tylonal an...

Fish Fridays

The school cafeteria always served fish sandwiches on Fridays during Lent. I hated most things from the school cafeteria and wasn't too fond of fish to begin with. Combine the two and it made for some hungry Friday afternoons. For the longest time I thought this was what Lent was all about. Fish on Fridays. The symbol for Christians was an icthus, or a fish. I thought it was related. Like so many things in the Christian faith. I didn't get it. A few years later, I thought I did. Lent meant giving something up. Giving up sodas or my watching 90210 for 40 days would somehow better help me understand the sacrifice Christ made for me on the cross. Hey, if he could lay down his life, maybe I could lay off the caffeine for awhile. I never chose anything too difficult to give up. I always picked something that I would miss, but would be good for me anyways. Hey, I can be holy and try to lose weight too. Christ didn't really have that option. He couldn't choose bet...
